August rainfall almost double the average in Jefferson

Jefferson received nearly double the average precipitation for August, according to volunteer weather observer John Beltz. He reports a total of 6.51 inches of rain for the month, with 3.84 inches being normal.

Beltz reports rain fell on 16 days in August, with 1.43 inches on Aug. 7 as the most rainfall in a 24-hour period. Rainfall totals were 1.2 inches on Aug. 6 and again on Aug. 29, with 0.81 inch on Aug. 21. Eight of the rainfalls were accompanied by thunder.

Record rainfall for August in Jefferson was 14.69 inches in 1954.

Beltz also reports damaging winds during the 24 hours preceding 7 am on Aug. 31, and fog on nine days.

The temperature did not hit 90 degrees during the month. Beltz reports a high temperature of 89 degrees on Aug. 25, with only four days with a high of 85 or warmer. On 18 days, the temperature was 79 degrees or cooler. A low temperature of 53 degrees was reported on five days in August.

The average high temperature was cooler than normal but the average low temperature was warmer than normal. Average high temperature was 78.8 degrees, compared to the normal of 83.5 degrees. Average low temperature was 62.1 degrees, compared to the normal of 60.3 degrees.

The record high temperature for August in Jefferson is 107 degrees on Aug. 5 and Aug. 8, 1934. The record low temperature is 35 degrees on Aug. 30, 1915.
